What’s in the History of American Eagle Gold Coins?

Only the United States Congress can produce the American Eagle Gold Coins. This manufacturing was authorized with the passing of the 1985 Gold Bullion Coin Act. Under the legislation, four different-weight coins are authorized to be produced. These four weights are 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz). All four weights were initially issued in two versions: proof and bullion. The United States Congress set the face value of these coins as standard practice with any other legal tender issued within the United States. 

The first-ever American Eagle Gold Coin was released in 1986. Immediately, all four weights were made available for public purchase under the bullion gold coin program. The proofs were available only in weights of 1 oz in 1986. In 1987, the proof program included the ½ oz weight, while in 1988, it included the 1/10 oz coins. 

The 20th anniversary of the American Eagle Gold Coin series included Silver Eagle, launched in 2006. This Silver Eagle was a new burnished American Eagle Gold Coin version. This burnished version of the coin was introduced specifically for the collectors. The United States Mint already had the proof version of these Gold Eagle coins available for their collectors. The burnished version of the coin is manufactured through a unique minting process. This gives it its enhanced value for all those numismatics interested in displaying and exhibiting visually brilliant coins. 

How Did The Design of the Gold Eagle Series Evolve? 

The United States Mint opted for a historic coinage design for the American Eagle Gold Coins. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt hand-picked Augustus Saint-Gaudens to revitalize the US gold coinage with a new brilliant design. 

The crowning achievement of the Saint-Gaudens was the design of Lady Liberty featuring the Lady in her full-length figure. Her hair and robe flow freely in the breeze as she moves from the nation’s capital. She carries a torch of light in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. This signifies a sense of peace as if she is the deity guiding the nation toward a calm environment. 

The original design of the Saint-Gauden was used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin. Between 1907 and 1933, this coin was considered one of the finest designs in the entire United States. Saint-Gaudens, however, could not live much to witness his design being featured on the American gold coin. He passed away following a long-term illness just a few months before the release of the coins in 1907. 

Saint-Gauden’s design featured Liberty striding forward with the US Capitol Building at her feet. She had the setting sun’s rays at her back and around 46 stars in her surroundings dispersed throughout the rim of the coin. In 1912, the United States Congress authorized the addition of two more stars to Saint-Gauden’s design to recognize the addition of Arizona and New Mexico to the Union. The image to be imprinted on the American Eagle Gold Coin featured two more stars for recognizing the addition of Alaska and Hawaii to the Union in the post-World War II era. 

Coin’s reverse side features a family of bald eagles nestling in their home. Miley Busiek introduced this design. The image featured a male bald eagle returning to his nest with branches in its talons. Within the nest is a female bald eagle depicting a standing vigilant guard over her young hatchlings resting in their nest. Busiek created this design in 1986, which is widely seen on the American Eagle Gold Coins. 

2021’s New Design for Gold Eagle Reverse 

The year 2021 marks the 35th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle. With its 35th anniversary, the United States Mint released a limited edition brand-new design on the reverse side of their American Eagle Gold Coins. The credit for creating this design goes to the US Mint Artistic Infusion Program Artist Jennie Norris. 

The new design features – 

An American bald eagle shows incredibly detailed feathers over its head. The bald eagle stares towards the horizon. Its piercing glaze appears, cutting right through the viewer. You can quickly identify individual features present all over its body. The distinction of features between its head and body is too clearly visible.

The new design element features a lot of inscriptions like ‘E Pluribus Unum,’ ‘United States of America,’ and ‘In God, We Trust.’ You will find these inscriptions over the head of this bald American eagle. At the bottom, these coins feature two inscriptions, ‘1 oz Fine Gold’ and ’50 Dollars’. The fractional-ounce coins have requisite markings of the weights and purity of each coin. 

The designer of these stunning limited edition coins was Jennie Norris. She was selected from a pool of 34 designers to be the face of this limited edition release. Ms. Norris is a professional graphic designer, an illustrator, and an award-winning artist. Her art and designs have been featured in several gift and stationary industries. She has also contributed her designs to other retail product brands like Hasbro, SeaWorld, Crayola, Target, Hershey, and Costco. In this American Eagle Gold Coin design, Ms. Norris drew all her earnest efforts to reflect the captivating beauty of the bald eagle of the United States. 

Bullion Gold Eagle Coins

With their first introduction, the demand for the 1 oz coins trespassed the 1.3 million demand alone. The demand for other weights was 599,000 for ½ oz, 726,000 for ¼ oz, and 912,000 for 1/10 oz, respectively. These rising demands later subsided around the 1980s and early 1990s. Again, in the late 1990s, they peaked in the early 2000s. Then again, until the mid-2000s, the mintage figures declined significantly. This decline continued until the Great Recession of 2008 set in. This is when the gold eagles gained new heights to fly high. The spot prices, the demand for precious metals in the industry, and the performance of the global stock markets significantly influence the values of Ebbs and flows. 

Proof Gold Eagle Coins

Burnished Gold Eagle Coins 

Until the 20th century, American Gold Eagles of 2006 expanded their program to incorporate their new limited edition burnished coins. These coins were explicitly targeted at numismatists for collecting, displaying, or exhibiting their American Gold Eagles. These new limited edition coins were struck using a unique coining process similar to those used to produce their proof coins. 

The United States Mint started its coining process by manufacturing burnished coins and loading their blanks into a spinning drum. These blanks are called planchets. In the past, wet sand was used in this step as a friction agent. This damp sand is a polishing medium that imparts a unique finish to the blanks before they are struck. Today, the United States Mint uses balls measuring 6 mm to create a smooth and matte-like finish on the blank surface. 

With each blank passing through the spinning drum, individual blanks are taken out individually. Mint employees handling this section continuously put on their gloves. The blanks are then transferred to the coining press to avoid contamination of the finishing stage of the blanks using oil and dirt. The next step is striking, where each blank is hand-loaded onto the printing press. More pressure is applied to all the blanks and regular currency to impart a striking finish. 

The Burnished American Gold Eagle passes through a similar process of coining. These coins appear even closer to the bullion coins of their series. The polishing and high-pressure coining processes impart a softly frosted appearance to the coins. The process results in a more detailed appearance of the design features, including bald eagles and Lady Liberty – one on each side. 

Each design appears to float over the background field of the coin. This appearance is deeply mirrored. The primary striking characteristic for any casual observer is a mint mark present on the Burnished American Gold Eagle. The bullion coins do not have this mint mark. All burnished gold eagles carry a ‘W’ mint mark for identifying the West Point Mint as the place where it is produced.
